Ako Ronin: The famous 47 samurai were involved in the Ako Incident (1702-03) and this has since also become a famous Kabuki play in Japan. The incident occurred when the lord of the Ako clan, Naganori Asano, was ordered to take his life by his own sword after losing his temper at Kira Yoshinaka at Edo Castle. Asano’s vassals, now masterless samurai, rebelled against Asano’s ‘execution’ and, led by head vassal Kuranosuke Oishi, they then set out to take revenge on Kira, which they did two years later.
